FIFA WC URUGUAY TEAM: La Celeste, or Uruguay, as they are known, are one of the teams that have been on the rise for the better part of the last decade and have also started leaving their mark at the biggest tournament of them all, the World Cups.
In Russia, they made it to the Quarterfinals and also knocked out Portugal, who will be their group mates this time around. La Celeste will be aiming to better their display from Russia as we inch closer to the first winter World Cup.
FIFA WC URUGUAY SQUAD: Uruguay has been a team who have always garnered respect, whether they play in Copa America or the World Cup, as everyone knows that this is a team that can flex their muscles and beat you straight.
They also won the Copa America in 2011 and have been consistent in their displays ever since, but have not quite replicated the same winning momentum as they did in 2011.
They were at their very best at the 2010 World Cup as they reached the semi-finals and ran Netherlands right till the very end, but failed to beat the Oranje team. La Celeste is considered the third-best team in South America and they displayed the same during the World Cup Qualifiers as they finished behind Brazil and Argentina.
Even though they did not have any hitches in Qualifying, their GD was 0 as they scored and conceded 22 goals, and their aim in Qatar should be to be solid defensively.
URUGUAY TEAM NEWS: Even though the 4-4-2 formation is considered ‘old school’ by a lot of pundits and fans, the La Celeste is a team that still loves to employ this formation and it reaps rewards for them as well.
Even though they play in a formation that is deemed not suitable for today’s game, they do well to get the ball up ahead and don’t hold possession for possession’s sake.
Their players try to dribble the ball into space and try to drag opposition players out of their position so that they can exploit the same. Valverde’s in god mode this season for Real Madrid CF as he has excelled in every position he has played in, be it CM, CAM, CDM, RM, and also RW, as he has been banging in goals for fun.
Luis Suarez will also be key as his understanding of the game plus his off-the-ball movement. Luis’ involvement with Darwin Nunez will be another aspect to keep an eye out for in Qatar.
URUGUAY Team INJURY LIST: The big miss for Uruguay will be the absence of their defender from FC Barcelona, Ronald Araujo, who will miss the tournament after undergoing surgery on his right thigh.
FIFA WC URUGUAY GROUP NEWS: Uruguay shares Group H with Portugal, South Korea, and Ghana in the 2022 WC in Qatar this time. Alongside Portugal, La Celeste is in pole position to finish at the top of the group.
FIFA WC URUGUAY Matches & Schedule: La Celeste will play their first game of the World Cup against South Korea on the 24th of November, followed by the game that everyone will be watching, their game against Portugal on the 29th and their final game of the group stage will be versus Ghana on the 2nd of December.
