The Women’s World Cup returns to India after more than a decade as the ICC tournament kicks off on September 30. 8 teams will compete for the biggest prize in women’s cricket, with India hosting the tournament alongside Sri Lanka. The action begins with the IND vs SL game in Guwahati, which also hosts the opening ceremony. A star studded event is expected with Bollywood royalty Shreya Ghoshal, Papon and several other appearances scheduled on Tuesday.
Shreya Ghoshal, Papon to perform, tribute for Zubeen Garg
The Women’s World Cup opening ceremony will take place before the action begins in the IND-W vs SL-W match. While BCCI had grand plans for the opening ceremony, they were reportedly toned down following the death of singer Zubeen Garg. Garg was one of the most renowned and culturally influencing artists from the region and instead the celebrations were tweaked in his honour.
The Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati will witness Shreya Ghosal, Papon and Joi Barua among artists set to perform during the opening ceremony. A 40-minute tribute performance is expected as per reports, with Shillong Chamber Choir also set to perform.
The Assam Cricket Association confirmed that it will distribute 5,000 free tickets via Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) to encourage fans to attend the tribute show.
Alongside the musical performances the BCCI have invited all former women’s cricket team captains for the tournament opener. The Indian cricket board plans to felicitate them for their contributions to Indian cricket.
The opening ceremony is expected to start at 2 PM IST, with the match set to follow at 3 PM. Performances could continue in the mid-innings break, however the same could not be confirmed.
