Will the ICC Champions Trophy be the last hurrah for India cricket team captain Rohit Sharma? Shubman Gill was asked the tough question on the eve of the India vs. New Zealand match. The 25-year-old has clearly stated that there have been no such talks regarding the matter. Right now, the entire focus is on winning the match and lifting a second ICC trophy in 9 months.
Retirement not on Rohit Sharma’s mind, says Shubman Gill
“No discussion in the dressing room or with me (about Rohit Sharma retiring),” Gill told reporters in Dubai.
The Indian vice-captain further added that even Rohit Sharma isn’t thinking about it and hasn’t said anything to the team right now. If the veteran opener indeed wishes to hang up his boots, he’ll have a think after the ICC Champions Trophy Final.
“Even Rohit bhai would be thinking about the Champions Trophy final, like all of us. So nothing like that now,” Gill added.
BCCI has had retirement talks with Rohit Sharma
Given how the last few months have gone for Rohit Sharma, especially as India’s Test captain, he might be thinking about leaving on a high. Recently, a report had claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will decide regarding Rohit’s future as India captain depending on the result of the ICC Champions Trophy Final.
This could mean that even though Rohit Sharma might want to continue, if Team India loses to New Zealand in Dubai on March 9, the BCCI might tell the opener that it’s the end of the road for him. One mustn’t forget that the Mumbaiker has already retired from T20Is, and at 37, it won’t be a shock if he leaves international cricket.
