A report has now shed light on whether Mustafizur Rahman will be entitled to any compensation at all after being released by KKR

Bangladesh cricket team pacer Mustafizur Rahman is unlikely to get even a single penny from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after being released before IPL 2026. Amid soaring tensions between India and Bangladesh, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had instructed the franchise to let go of the player, citing unrest that had developed in parts of the country over his participation in the cash-rich league. A report has now shed light on whether Rahman will be entitled to any compensation at all, after being bought for Rs 9.20 crore by KKR in the IPL 2026 auction.

Not a single penny for Mustafizur Rahman?

As per news agency PTI, an IPL source claimed that international players are paid by a franchise if they are injured after joining the camp or during the tournament as their salaries are insured. However, Mustafizur’s situation isn’t covered as a part of the insurance scheme and hence he is unlikely to get any money from KKR. The source claimed that the only way for the Bangladesh pacer to get any compensation was by taking the legal route but pointed out that since IPL came under the jurisdiction of Indian law, no overseas player would want to take the route.

In case of an insurance claim, this current situation isn’t covered so KKR are under no official obligation to pay a penny. It is unfortunate but Mustafizur doesn’t have much option but to take a legal route and that too IPL comes under Indian law jurisdiction. No overseas cricketer would want to go through this or take the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) route,” the source said.

As per the source, the salaries of all IPL players are insured, with 50% of their salary paid from insurance if the player is injured after joining the camp or during the tournament. However, Rahman’s case is an exemption. Besides, the Bangladesh pacer has decided to take part in Pakistan Super League (PSL) days after he was released by KKR. In his response to being released by the team, Rahman said, “If they release me, there is nothing much I can do.”

What KKR said

Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that BCCI/IPL as the regulator of IPL has instructed it to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The release has been carried out following due process and consultations, upon the instruction of the Board of Control of Cricket in India. BCCI will allow Kolkata Knight Riders a replacement player in line with IPL regulations, and further details will be communicated in due course.
