Why doesn't Gambhir resign? India head coach questioned for playing against Pakistan in Asia Cup

Several times in the past, including in May this year, Gambhir had said that India shouldn't play cricket against Pakistan.

Since his retirement from cricket, Gautam Gambhir has stood firm on one stance: that India shouldn’t play cricket with Pakistan. His statements haven’t been about bilateral cricket, which both nations haven’t played since 2012, but about all forms of cricket. This means Gambhir has always been willing to let go of points in ICC events and risk winning the tournament.

Gambhir’s stance on India vs Pakistan cricket matches

He became India’s head coach in July and has already played against Pakistan once at the Champions Trophy. The upcoming Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan will be the second time Gambhir will be in charge of the team against the arch-rivals.

There wasn’t pushback in March, but in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and skirmish between the two nations, Gambhir has been questioned as well. His personal stance has been to boycott India vs Pakistan matches, but he still continues to be India’s head coach in these matches.

Questioned for changing stance

Gambhir’s former India and Kolkata Knight Riders teammate, Manoj Tiwary, has questioned him regarding this. “I always felt that he’s someone who is a hypocrite,” he told CricTracker.

Manoj says if Gambhir was a man of his word, he would have resigned as India’s head coach the moment he had to play against Pakistan. But he’s not just done it once; this Asia Cup match will be the second occasion where he disregards his own stance on the matter.

“He’s a hypocrite because he’s the one who said that India, when he was not the coach of Team India, should never play against Pakistan. What will he do now? He’s the coach of the team that’s going to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Why can’t he just resign and say that I will not be part of Team India because you are playing with Pakistan?”
