How does the Super 8 tiebreaker rule work in T20 World Cup?
Speaking of the Super 8 format in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the top 8 teams from the group stage are split into two groups of four each. Each team plays three matches, and the top two from here on make the semi-finals. But how does the Super 8 points system, tie-breaker, etc., look like? Let’s find out!
Super Eight qualification rules
At first, points are everything, whereas Net Run Rate (NRR) is a silent assassin. The team winning their Super 8 fixture is awarded 2 points, whereas a loss gives them zero. Furthermore, in case of a no result or a tie, the two teams will share a point each. Furthermore, if the teams are tied on points, then their NRR becomes the key criterion.
In case the number of wins and NRR also coincide, then the group rankings will be decided as per the head-to-head fixtures played between them. Finally, if the above-mentioned criteria do not fix the qualification, then the team’s position in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings before the start of the tournament falls in place.
How the Points Table Works
In the Super 8 stage, each team plays 3 matches, facing every other side in its group once. Teams are ranked by total points, and if two or more teams are tied, Net Run Rate (NRR) is used as the tiebreaker.
| Result | Points Awarded |
|---|---|
| Win | 2 points |
