India’s star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is back in India after an impressive debut season in county cricket. He is now preparing for the upcoming Ranji Trophy, which begins on October 11. During his time with Northamptonshire CCC, Chahal played some phenomenal cricket, earning the reputation of being one of the best overseas signings in recent years. Across the four-day and one-day formats, Chahal claimed 24 wickets at an average of 17, including three five-wicket hauls and two four-wicket hauls.
In a conversation with Times of India, Chahal said, “County Cricket Is Tough, it gave me an opportunity to showcase my skills against a very good standard of cricket. With India touring England next year, I wanted to prove my capabilities,”. His performance on English soil could potentially influence India’s plans for the England tour in 2025.
County cricket: A pathway for Indian players
Indian cricketers increasingly recognise the value of county cricket for skill enhancement and growth. Recently players like Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar, and Prithvi Shaw, along with Chahal, have used the platform to either regain or secure their place in the Indian national side.
Chahal yet to make a debut in Test
Despite being celebrated in white ball cricket over the years, Yuzi Chahal is still yet to make his debut in the Indian test team. The 34-year-old spinner is still working hard to get into the test team.
Brindon Bagirathan paved way to county
chahal expressed gratitude towards Brindon Bagirathan, who facilitated his county cricket opportunity “Firstly, I am very grateful to Brindon sir who gave me an opportunity to play in County cricket, and then the Rajasthan Royal’s coaches introduced me to Krish Patel, a highly-educated 18-year old cricketer who is thought to have a very bright future in the game. I want to see him play internationally and if I can help, I am always there.”
