Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma doubtful for World Cup 2027 as BCCI set to discuss future

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are arguably the two best ODI players in the world, but one doesn't know, what future holds for them.

The world hasn’t seen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in action in international cricket since the Champions Trophy win a few months back. The duo are retired from the Tests and T20Is, and the only format they are still active in, is the ODIs. While Virat is 36, the ODI skipper is 38 now, and there is no certainty, at least for now, if they would be around for the 2027 World Cup.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might perhaps will be seen in action in India colors, during the Australia ODI series, and then against South Africa. Post that, they might have a chance to play in the six ODIs vs NZ and ENG, from JAN to July 2026. In short, cricketing opportunities will be few for them.

Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma Future Plan to be Discussed

The larger question is, will that be enough to keep Kohli and Rohit ready for the ODI World Cup 2027? And for that, a source has confirmed PTI, that a call on their future could be taken soon. “Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so, there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time.” the source indicated.

Can’t Force to Retire

The source maintained, that the duo won’t be forced to announce retirement, but a clarity is certainly needed. “Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. “So, I don’t think nobody’s going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that,” he added.
