Former India fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad is eyeing a return to administration. Prasad will contest in the upcoming KSCA Elections set to be held in October-November. The 56-year-old was previously vice-president to Anil Kumble in the 2010s, while also has a distinguished coaching career. It would mark the first elections since the stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium that saw 11 people killed.
Venkatesh Prasad to contest elections KSCA turmoil
To call it a turmoil would be an understatement. The Karnataka State Cricket Association bore the brunt of the stampede in June, with Chinnaswamy Stadium declared unsuitable for large gatherings. Subsequently the Maharaja T20 and Women’s World Cup matches scheduled were also moved out. KSCA secretary Shankar A and treasurer ES Jairam had stepped down citing moral responsibility. However, incumbent Raghuram Bhatt remained in power, whose tenure ends on September 30.
As per PTI, Prasad will partner with veteran administrator Vinay Mruthyunjaya in the upcoming elections. Mruthyunjaya is a member of the BCCI financial committee and was the former KSCA treasurer.
Prasad himself is no stranger to the KSCA. He served as Anil Kumble’s deputy from 2013 to 2016. Kumble left to take the Indian coaching job, while Prasad himself sought opportunities elsewhere. He enjoyed a stint with the Punjab Kings and also made a name for himself with broadcasting gigs.
Should he win, the first order will be to save face of the organisation. Chinnaswamy is a prime venue for Indian cricket and restoring its glory will be first on the agenda. India host the T20 World Cup and it would be a shame if Bengaluru misses out. Even RCB could be forced to play their home games elsewhere in IPL 2026.
