Team India have the chance to become the most successful team in T20 World Cup history when they will enter the Narendra Modi Stadium to face New Zealand in this year’s final. India are set to play their fourth T20 World Cup final.

Few teams have shown the kind of consistency India have managed in the T20 World Cup. From the magical run in 2007 to the unbeaten campaign in 2024, India have regularly found themselves deep in the tournament. Before the 2026 final, they had already lifted the trophy twice and finished runners-up once.

India’s journey through previous T20 World Cup finals

India’s first appearance in a T20 World Cup final came in the inaugural edition in 2007. A young side led by MS Dhoni stunned the cricketing world by defeating Pakistan in a dramatic final in Johannesburg. Gautam Gambhir anchored the innings with a superb 75 while Irfan Pathan’s three-wicket haul helped India defend 157. The match famously ended with Misbah-ul-Haq’s scoop shot landing in Sreesanth’s hands, sealing a five-run victory.

Seven years later, India returned to the final in the 2014 edition held in Bangladesh. Virat Kohli was the standout performer throughout the tournament and scored 77 in the final as well. However, India’s total of 130 proved insufficient as Sri Lanka chased it down comfortably thanks to Kumar Sangakkara’s unbeaten half-century.

India had to wait another decade for their next title shot. In between, they stumbled really bad. In 2024, Rohit Sharma’s team produced a memorable performance to defeat South Africa in Barbados and lift their second T20 World Cup trophy. Kohli once again stepped up with a crucial 76, while Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya delivered under pressure to defend 176 in a tense finish.

Now, heading into the 2026 final, India already hold a strong record in T20 World Cup finals with two wins from three appearances. A victory against New Zealand would not only give them their third title but also make them the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup. Also, it will make India the first team to win the T20 World Cup on their home soil.
