Smriti Mandhana scales 5k mark, first hit 1000 runs in a year
Smriti Mandhana has enjoyed a golden run in ODIs. The left-hander scored her first half-century of the Women’s World Cup 2025 in crucial clash against Australia on Sunday. In the process, Mandhana became the first to score 1000 runs in a calendar year in ODI cricket. The Indian vice-captain went past Belinda Clark’s tally of 970 runs, which she made in 1997 against South Africa and now breached the 4-figure mark at Vizag.
Most runs in a calendar year in ODIs (Women’s)
- 1038* – Smriti Mandhana (IND-W, 2025)
- 970 – Belinda Clark (AUS-W, 1997)
- 882 – Laura Wolvaardt (SA-W, 2022)
- 880 – Debbie Hockley (NZ-W, 1997)
- 853 – Amy Satterthwaite (NZ-W, 2016)
She later became just the 5th overall to score more than 5000 ODI runs. Mandhana needed 56 to reach the milestone, and he did so while putting her side in command. She is only the second Indian after Mithali Raj to breach the mark. It took the Indian vice-captain 112 matches to get to the record. Mandhana is the youngest and fastest to get there in terms of innings (112) and balls faced (5568), bettering Stafanie Taylor (129 innings) and Suzie Bates (6182 balls), respectively.
Sunday’s effort is Mandhana’s 10th 50+ score against Australia in ODIs. It is the most by an Indian batter, going past Mithali Raj’s 9.
