In a breaking development, Shubman Gill is reportedly all set to be named India’s new ODI captain for the IND vs AUS series. The Punjab batter, who is the Test skipper at present, was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. As per reports, Gill is now all set to take over the mantle from the Hitman, hinting at the Indian selectors’ plan to make him the all-format captain in the future.
Gill to replace Rohit as new ODI captain
As per The Indian Express, Gill is set to be named the new captain even though Rohit will be a part of the Indian squad for the ODI series against Australia. The report states that the selectors informed the Test captain that they want him to lead the side in the ODI World Cup in 2027 and hence wanted him to take over the reins from Rohit before the IND vs AUS series. The report further stated that Gill attended the selection committee meeting virtually on Saturday, even as he is currently playing in the IND vs WI 1st Test.
Further, the report states that the selectors also conveyed their decision to make Gill the ODI captain to head coach Gautam Gambhir. The Punjab batter was also named Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for Asia Cup 2025. Meanwhile, Rohit and Virat Kohli, will reportedly still be in the scheme of things at present. The duo last featured in an international game in the CT 2025 final earlier this year.
On Friday, a report had claimed that the selectors would discuss the future of ODI captaincy directly with Rohit before announcing the squad for IND vs AUS ODIs. The squad for the three-match series is expected to be announced after the end of IND vs WI 1st Test on Saturday.
