Tensions flared in the dying minutes of Day 3 at Lord’s, and India captain Shubman Gill found himself in the middle of a boiling point. However, former England batter Jonathan Trott wasn’t impressed. Taking a thinly veiled dig at Gill’s aggressive demeanour, Trott suggested that the young captain’s “acting” and confrontational approach was reminiscent of Virat Kohli. However, it wasn’t flattering.
Final over drama lights up Lord’s
With just six minutes remaining on Day 3, India were desperate to sneak in two overs before stumps after equalling England’s score of 387. But Zak Crawley had other plans. The England opener took over a minute to take guard, then stopped Jasprit Bumrah twice. Once after getting hit on the gloves, and again to complain about movement near the sight screen.
The delaying tactics worked. Only one over was bowled before stumps. But what grabbed more attention than the clock was Shubman Gill’s reaction. The Indian skipper stormed toward Crawley, hurled an expletive-laced comment (“Grow some b****”) and sarcastically mimed for a substitution, suggesting Crawley should be replaced like an Impact Player.
Ben Duckett joined Crawley as tensions rose. Bumrah, KL Rahul, and others surrounded the openers with sarcastic claps and pointed stares, turning Lord’s into a theatre of mind games.
Trott: “Gill’s acting like the previous captain”
Reacting to the heated exchange, Jonathan Trott, speaking on JioHotstar, questioned Gill’s on-field behaviour and drew parallels with former captain Virat Kohli, who was worldwide known for his intense and animated presence.
“A little bit of gamesmanship, but I think England, for me, we don’t know what went on when England were fielding, whether they were dishing it out. I don’t like the acting from Shubman Gill,” Trott remarked. “I just think as a captain, you set the tone. As I’ve said before, you know, pointing fingers and getting a little bit confrontational, very much like a previous captain, sort of getting in the face of the opposition.”
“I just don’t think that’s what it’s about. I think it sets a bad tone. And I’m up for being competitive and being tough on the field. I just think sometimes you’ve got to rise above it.”
