Shubman Gill has played the most international games for India in 2025, and the BCCI already needed to look at his workload.

After Virat Kohli’s majestic 52nd ODI century elated the entire nation, more good news is coming our way. India’s Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill has finally reached the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) to begin his rehabilitation, as reported earlier. The all-format player had an existing neck niggle and worsened it during the Kolkata Test.

Now, as per the Times of India, Gill has landed in Bengaluru to consult with the BCCI doctors and medical staff. Despite taking multiple flights in the last week or so, there hasn’t been any major issue in his neck, which gives India confidence that we could see Gill play as early as the India vs South Africa T20Is.

Shubman Gill on road to recovery

The neck injury Gill picked up in Kolkata looked serious from the start, and every update since then pointed in the same direction. Gill left the pitch clutching the back of his neck, retired hurt after only three balls and was admitted to the hospital later that evening when the stiffness got worse. Since Gill is one of Team India’s most valuable assets and leads in two formats, it was assumed for the majority of the last 48 hours that he shouldn’t be risked.

Gill was seen with a neck brace as well when he was admitted to the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata. It came as a huge surprise that Gill travelled with the team to Guwahati. While Nitish Kumar Reddy replaced Gill for the 2nd Test, Gill was consequently ruled out of the ongoing IND vs SA ODIs.

There are no red flags at the moment and he has taken multiple flights – Kolkata to Guwahati, Guwahati to Mumbai, Mumbai to Chandigarh and now Chandigarh to Bengaluru – without any discomfort. All efforts right now are aimed at having him back on the park but it will not be a rushed process. The moment he is 100% and feels ready for the grind, he will be back with the squad. He is an important all-format player and everyone wants him to be absolutely ready,” said an official privy to developments to TOI.

Even Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, alluded to the fact that Gill is on a great road to recovery. “I think it’s best for the medical team to give the update on that. I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him, and he’s recovering well, so that’s pleasing to hear,” Morkel told reporters before the Ranchi ODI.
