Shubman Gill marked the final Test of the India vs England series with yet another milestone. The Indian captain went past former captain Sunil Gavaskar for the most runs in a series by an Indian captain. Gavaskar had set the record in 1978/79, with Gill surpassing that in his debut series.
Shubman Gill breaks 46-year Gavaskar record
Shubman Gill has enjoyed a prolific tour of England. The Indian captain on Thursday etched his name into history with yet another stunning display. Gill took his tally to 733 before lunch on Day 1 in the IND vs ENG 5th Test. Sunil Gavaskar scored 732 against the West Indies back in the day. The former India captain also has the record for most runs by an Indian in a series, with his 774 also coming against the West Indies.
Gill could yet surpass that mark in the IND vs ENG 5th Test at The Oval. The Indian captain has 4 centuries in 8 innings including a career best 269. With India chasing to level the series, the onus will be on Gill to lead the Indian batting effort in London.

732 – Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1978/79
655 – Virat Kohli vs ENG, 2016/17
610 – Virat Kohli vs SL, 2017/18

Gill is on the cusp of multiple other records in London. The 25-year-old needs 20 more to become the batsman with most runs in an India vs England series. Should he go past 53 in the IND vs ENG 5th Test, Gill will have broken another Gavaskar record for most runs in a series. If Gill goes on to score 80, he would be the first Asian cricketer to score 800 runs in a Test series.
Gill’s innings was however cut short early. The Indian captain was run out for 21 after brainfade moment in the game. The 25-year-old will have another chance later in the Test to scale down those records, should the weather and England permit.
