As per reports, the BCCI is eyeing to make Shreyas Iyer as India's future ODI captain once Rohit Sharma takes a call on his future

India cricket team star Shreyas Iyer is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain in the future. The Mumbai batter, who has been in prolific form across formats of the game, was snubbed from India’s Asia Cup squad that was announced on Tuesday. However, a report has now claimed that the BCCI aims to make Iyer the new ODI captain after Rohit’s retirement from the format.

Shreyas Iyer to be new ODI captain?

As per Dainik Jagaran, the BCCI is eyeing to make Shreyas the ODI captain in the future, after Rohit takes a call on his future in the format. The Hitman is currently active only in the 50-over format, having announced his retirement from T20Is after the WC in 2024 and from Tests in May 2025. A source told the publication that the stakeholders had recently held discussions over the future of all three formats of the game.

The decision (to make Gill as ODI vice-captain for Champions Trophy 2025) was taken based on the situation at that time. At this time, there is so much cricket happening that it will be impossible for one player to captain the side in all three formats. Hence, Gill has been given Test captaincy and has been named T20I vice-captain and is being seen as the future T20I captain,” the source said.

Earlier, reports had claimed that the ODI series against Australia, which begins in October, could be Rohit and Virat Kohli’s last. On being asked if Iyer will captain the side in the Australia ODIs, the source claimed that a meeting to discuss the matter will take place after the Asia Cup. The report states that a decision on when Shreyas will become the ODI captain will depend on Rohit’s call on his future. It is pertinent to point out that the next ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in 2027 and Rohit is unlikely to stay on as captain.

Iyer’s record as captain in 2024/25

While Shreyas Iyer has never captained the ODI or T20I side, he has ample experience in leading Mumbai in the domestic circuit. He led the side in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024/25 in which he amassed 325 runs from 5 matches. Iyer also captained Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 and led them to the title. Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024 following which he was released by he franchise. In IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings finished at the top of the points table with 9 wins from 14 matches.
