India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has suffered a fresh injury setback just when things seemed to be falling into place for him again.

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer will remain in a Sydney hospital for at least a week after suffering a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding during the third ODI against Australia. What initially looked like a painful landing while taking a spectacular catch off Alex Carey’s shot has turned into one of the most serious injuries of his career.

According to fresh reports, Iyer briefly lost consciousness in the dressing room, with his vitals dropping alarmingly before the team’s medical staff rushed him to the hospital. Scans later revealed a spleen injury, and he was immediately admitted to the ICU. The BCCI medical team and specialists in both Sydney and India are monitoring his condition closely, with one of Iyer’s family members now by his side in Australia.

“Could’ve been fatal, but things are stable now”

As per NDTV and PTI, the situation could have taken a dangerous turn if not for the medical team’s quick response.

Shreyas has been in the ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery,” a source told PTI.

The report further added that Iyer’s condition has stabilised, but recovery won’t be quick. “The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.

Initially, Iyer was expected to be out for about three weeks, but the internal bleeding has extended his rehabilitation period. Doctors believe it may take two to three months before he’s fully fit, ruling him out of all cricketing actions till then.

How crucial is Iyer to India’s ODI setup?

For India, Iyer’s absence would’ve been massive if he was certain to miss some matches. After all, the 30-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers at number four since 2022, ending the country’s long search for stability in that position. He has scored 1430 runs at an average of 55 and a strike rate nearing 100 at number four in this period. Even in the second ODI at Adelaide, Iyer looked fluent, scoring 61 with a new side-on stance.

While the reports initially said he may be out for a minimum of three weeks, now it will take months. He is now most certain to miss the three one-day internationals against South Africa at home. India play New Zealand at home (3 ODIs) from January 11-18 and it would be fascinating to see if he recovers before that.
