A BCCI source has claimed that Sarfaraz Khan's exclusion from the India A squad for South Africa series isn't linked to bias

Two days after Sarfaraz Khan was left out of the India A squad for the South Africa series, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source has broken silence on the matter. Despite having fully recovered from a quadriceps injury, the Mumbai batter was not picked in the side and instead will feature in the Ranji Trophy. While there has been widespread outrage over Sarfaraz’s snub, a BCCI source has explained the rationale behind the decision of the selectors.

BCCI explains why Sarfaraz Khan wasn’t picked

As per NDTV, a BCCI source claimed that Sarfaraz’s exclusion was not due to non-performance or bias alleged by a section of social media. The source explained that the Mumbai batter had just returned to competitive cricket in the first round of Ranji Trophy after recovering from his injury. The source claimed that the selectors would assess Sarfaraz in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season before drafting him back to India A.

Sarfaraz was out with a quadriceps injury. He recently made a comeback and played the first round of the Ranji Trophy-that is the only competitive cricket he has played in a long time. The selectors will assess his form in the ongoing Ranji season before drafting him back into the India A set-up,” the source

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a PTI report had claimed that Sarfaraz had been left out of the India A squad due to Rishabh Pant. The report claimed that the India A captain was all but confirmed to bat at number 5, the same spot that Sarfaraz is also vying for. Another report claimed that the Mumbai batter was picked in the India A side for the series against England Lions only to avoid uncomfortable questions. The report stated that while he was assured of being picked for the IND vs WI Test series at home, he had recovered just two days after the squad was picked.
