India cricket team stars Sai Suhdarsan and Dhruv Jurel were seen batting in the nets with just a single pad ahead of the IND vs SA 2nd Test. The Indian batters had struggled to play spin at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and it ended up in the hosts losing the 1st Test by 30 runs. Ahead of the Guwahati Test, the Indian camp has decided to resort to an old-school method in order to counter the SA spinners effectively.
Indian batters train with just one pad to prepare for Harmer
As per news agency PTI, both Sudharsan and Jurel faced spinners with just one pad while batting in the nets at the optional training session on Tuesday. The old-school technique is insisted by coaches to encourage batters to block the deliveries with the bat and not the front pad. Another reason for practising with just one pad is also to ensure left-handed batters don’t resort to playing on the back-foot while being unable to figure out the turn off spinners.
The report states that head coach Gautam Gambhir kept a close eye on Sudharsan during the three-hour long practice session on Tuesday. The Tamil Nadu batter, who was benched in the IND vs SA 1st Test, could possibly re-enter the playing XI in Guwahati with Shubman Gill unlikely to take part in the contest. Only six Indian players, including Ravindra Jadeja, attended the practice session on Tuesday.
12 out of 18 wickets that India lost in the 1st Test were due to spin, with Simon Harmer wreaking havoc on the Indian batters. India are gearing up as they brace for another encounter with the Proteas spinner at in an unfamiliar Guwahati surface.
