A report has claimed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be forced to retire as the BCCI might ask them to play Vijay Hazare Trophy

In a fresh development, a report has claimed that the upcoming ODI series against Australia could be the last for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The veteran duo, who have already retired from Tests and T20Is, are active only in the 50-over format of the game. While the duo are scheduled to be in action next in October, it could might as well be their last.

Virat, Rohit to retire from ODIs in October?

As per Dainik Jagaran, Rohit and Virat are not automatic picks for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The report further states that the duo will have to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in order to stay in contention for spots in India’s playing XI in the 50-over format in the future. The report states that this directive may force Rohit and Virat to consider announcing their retirement after the series against Australia.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not fit in our plans for the ODI World Cup 2027,” the report quoted a source

Both Rohit and Virat will be approximately 40 years old by the time the 2027 World Cup arrives. The Vijay Hazare Trophy is scheduled to begin from December onwards. The duo of Ro-Ko last featured in a domestic tournament earlier this year when they participated in a Ranji Trophy game each after over 10 years.

Earlier, a source confirmed to news agency PTI, that a call on their future could be taken soon. “Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so, there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time.” the source indicated.
