In the latest development, Shreyas Iyer is all set to return as Mumbai’s captain for the side’s next two Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025/26 matches. The India cricket team star, who has been on the sidelines since October 2025, is set to make his return to competitive cricket in the 50-over domestic tournament. Iyer has been named vice-captain for the IND vs NZ ODI series that commences from January 11 onwards and his performance in the VHT game on January 6 will determine if he is fully cleared to return to international cricket.

Shreyas Iyer to return as Mumbai captain before NZ ODIs

As per Times of India, Iyer will lead Mumbai in the remainder of their Vijay Hazare Trophy games on January 6 and 8 in the absence of Shardul Thakur. Regular skipper Thakur has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament after sustaining a calf injury. Earlier, reports stated that the match against Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday would serve as Shreyas’ second Return to Play match simulation which will determine his return to international cricket if he passes it without any hiccups.

The Mumbai Cricket Association is pleased to announce that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the Captain of the Mumbai senior men’s team for the remaining league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” said MCA secretary Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar in a statement.

After suffering a lacerated spleen with internal bleeding after a diving catch, Shreyas lost around 6 kilograms in the last 2 months. Therefore, he needed time to gain back that mass and for his game to be where it was prior to his abdominal injury. Earlier, reports stated that Shreyas had successfully cleared four high-intensity skill sessions, testing his batting and fielding. Following that, he cleared a 1st round RTP match simulation at the BCCI’s CoE.

Apart from Shardul, Mumbai will also be without the services of Sarfaraz Khan, as he has suffered a quadriceps injury. Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube are also expected to take part in the game.
