Rajat Patidar gets fined due to Jitesh Sharma's mistakes; Cummins also breaches IPL's code of conduct

While it was RCB's second instance of slow-over rate, Cummins got fined for the first time at IPL 2025.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has added salt to the already-hurting wounds of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). For Jitesh Sharma’s mistakes, Rajat Patidar has to bear the brunt, as the IPL has fined the “permanent” RCB captain, Patidar, for slow over-rate in RCB’s recent loss against the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH). Meanwhile, SRH captain Pat Cummins has also been fined.

Patidar gets fined despite not being captain in RCB vs SRH match

Rajat Patidar had recovered from a finger injury, but Jitesh Sharma led RCB against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Lucknow. Patidar underwent rehab during the IPL 2025 suspension and was only cleared to return as an impact substitute, so Jitesh took charge of the team in their match against SRH.

Chasing a mammoth 232, RCB looked set at a superb run-chase. However, from 129/2, RCB crumbled under pressure and lost 8 wickets for just 60 more runs. As a result, they recorded their first loss outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. While Jitesh marked this loss as a necessary reality check, he didn’t know that RCB had another bad news coming their way. With Patidar being the designated skipper of the franchise, the IPL has handed a slow-over-rate suspension against his name.

It is Patidar’s team’s second offence after he got fined Rs 12 lac after RCB’s win over the Mumbai Indians earlier this season. With this being the second, Patidar has been fined Rs 24 lac. Moreover, the rest of the playing XI members, including the Impact Sub (Patidar himself), have also been fined Rs 6 lac or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower. Meanwhile, Pat Cummins, who had a clean slate prior to this encounter, endured his first fine of the season too.

IPL’s media advisory read:

“Royal Challengers Bengaluru designated captain Rajat Patidar has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 65 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.”

“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Patidar was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”

“Pat Cummins, Captain, Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate. As it was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Cummins was fined INR 12 Lakh.”
