His Twenty20 debut came on August 26, 2016, playing for Rawalpindi in the 2016–17 National T20 Cup. Following his standout performance at the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, he secured a deal with the Trinbago Knight Riders for the 2017 Caribbean Premier League. Subsequently, in 2017, Shadab joined the Brisbane Heat for Season 7 of the Big Bash League.

In June 2019, Shadab was picked to feature for the Edmonton Royals franchise in the 2019 Global T20 Canada tournament. Notably, on October 16, 2017, against Sri Lanka, he scored his maiden ODI fifty and was awarded Man of the Match. Despite a setback due to a virus, he was named in Pakistan’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup and took his 50th ODI wicket during the tournament.
