PCB files complaint with ICC over Fakhar Zaman's controversial catch in IND vs PAK match

Fakhar Zaman looked in fine touch but departed after a short cameo of 15 runs from 9 balls.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has lodged an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a controversial dismissal in the India vs Pakistan match.

According to Dunya News, the PCB feels TV umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge incorrectly ruled Fakhar Zaman out during the Asia Cup clash. The incident had happened in the third over of the match, when India’s wicketkeeper Sanju Samson took a catch that was referred to the third umpire to check whether it had carried or not.

At that point, Fakhar had scored 15 off 8 balls and Pakistan looked set for a big total. Ruchira saw two angles of the catch to determine whether it was clean or not. One favoured Fakhar, as it seemed like the ball was bouncing in front of Samson’s gloves, while the second one made it look like he’d grabbed it cleanly.

In the end, Ruchira went with the second one and ruled Fakhar out. The Pakistani opener was shocked by the decision, and it divided the internet as well.

Pakistan feels hard done by

After the match, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha stated that they believed it was not out. He further said that Pakistan might have gone on to score 20 more runs had Fakhar not been adjudged out but didn’t say definitively that the umpire was wrong.

“Umpires can make mistakes. But it did look like it bounced ahead of the keeper to me. I might be wrong. The way (Fakhar) was batting, if he had batted through the powerplay, we would probably have scored 190. But those are calls for umpires to make. To me, it looked like it bounced before the keeper. I might be mistaken, but so might be the umpire. We felt the ball touched the ground, but the umpire’s decision is final,” Salman said in the post-match press conference.
