Pat Cummins may miss all 5 Ashes Tests, Steve Smith likely to captain Australia

Australia captain Pat Cummins could potentially miss all five Tests against England in the Ashes which will start from Nov 21

In what could be a big blow for Australia, Pat Cummins could potentially miss most of the Ashes against England as he is yet to recover from his lumbar bone stress. The all-rounder, who was left out of the squads for AUS vs IND series at home, was earlier expected to recover in time for the series against England. However, latest reports suggest that Cummins’ comeback could be much delayed and that there are chances of him missing the entire 5-match series against England.

Cummins doubtful for Ashes

As per Sydney Morning Herald, there is no chance for Cummins to be fit in time for the 1st Ashes Test in Perth. The report states that he might miss all five Tests as well and that Steve Smith will act as stand-in skipper in Cummins’ absence. The all-rounder’s absence will come as a big blow for Australia.

Cummins, who had previously expressed confidence that he would be able to take a significant part in the series, is no chance for the opener in Perth, starting on November 21, and may even miss all five Tests, leaving Steve Smith as the likely stand-in skipper to face Ben Stokes’ England team,” the report stated.

Speaking at an event earlier in September, Cummins had revealed that he intended to start bowling four to six weeks time. The Australian captain admitted that he hadn’t thought about his return at length yet, while adding that it was going to be a bit of ‘wait and see’. Cummins is optimistic about making his comeback before the five-match Test series against England as he believes that there is ample time.

I’d imagine (I’d want to be bowling) at minimum a month out, maybe six weeks. But I’ve not thought that deeply about it yet. It’s still a bit of a wait and see. We’ve got plenty of time, so we’ll map a way back when we get closer. At the moment for the next few weeks it’s pretty light. Not much running and zero bowling,” Cummins said.
