Washington Sundar has played 12 Tests since his debut in 2021, most of which have come in the last 12 months.

Washington Sundar has emerged as one of the stars in the India vs England series. The all-rounder has consistently contributed with both bat and ball. His efforts peaked on Sunday, smashing a stunning century to help India draw the Test in Manchester. Since his Test debut in India’s incredible Gabba victory, Sundar has only played 12 Tests, often finding him on the sidelines.

Selectors should watch his performances: Sundar’s father after Manchester heroics

Washington Sundar’s father M Sundar had expressed his disappointment when the all-rounder was stranded on 96 against England in Ahmedabad in 2021. 4 years later, Washington eventually got to the landmark, helping India escape from the jaws of defeat.

Sundar batted 206 deliveries to finish 101 not out at Old Trafford, stitching a double century stand with Ravindra Jadeja. India promoted the left-hander to No.5 with Rishabh Pant’s injury. He showcased great technique and looked natural for the spot, prompting Sundar Sr to hit back at the selectors.

“Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn’t get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. The selectors should watch his performances,” Washington Sundar’s father M Sundar told Times of India.

‘My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches’

Sundar had scored 85 and 96* when England toured India in 2021 and picked up 2 wickets in three Tests. However, his next Test came 3 years later in India’s 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand. He has since been in and out of the side, often brought in to beef up the lower order batting. Washington’s father was unimpressed by how the selectors have treated him, questioning if any other cricketer ever got the same treatment.

My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year. He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now,” he added
