'One bad day...': Rahul Dravid gives ODI World Cup 2023 Final reality check to Gautam Gambhir's T20 team

Gautam Gambhir succeeded Rahul Dravid as India's all-format head coach after T20 World Cup 2026.

Team India has not lost a single bilateral series in T20 internationals since the T20 World Cup 2024. They have almost scored 300 runs, obliterated oppositions and even chased down 200+ totals in the quickest time. That’s how dominant they have been. The conversation before the T20 World Cup 2026 is not if India can win the World Cup but if there is any capable team of beating them. Well, but former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid, who himself had a bitter pill to swallow, has offered a reality check.

Rahul Dravid on if India can win T20 World Cup 2026

Dravid was looking prime to become only the second Indian head coach to win an ODI World Cup in 2023. Under him, the team never looked more settled and had all the bases covered. The camaraderie between Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma was there to be seen as they won ten consecutive games, all quite convincingly. Home conditions, players in top-notch form and nothing majorly going wrong…until it did.

In the all-important final, India faced Australia, and nothing went in the Men in Blue’s way. On a slowish Ahmedabad deck, Australia’s plans worked and they had India on the mat. Virat Kohli, who rarely gets out after a fifty, got out; Travis Head took a catch that had a slender possibility before riding on huge luck during his incredible century while chasing. India’s ten outstanding days stood nothing against one awful night. That is exactly what Dravid wants to convey to the Gautam Gambhir-coached side.

Irrespective of how strong the Indian team is, one bad day in the office can undo everything. They clearly start as favourites, and they will make it to the semi-finals, but as I have learned to my bitter disappointment, it’s about the better team on the day. Anybody can play a good knock and upset you,” Rahul said at an event celebrating the book The Rise of the Hitman by R. Kaushik.

India’s T20I side looks unbeatable as of now. The insane pool of talent has managed to carry the team even when a few players were out of form. The bowling is world class when both Varun Chakaravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah play together. There are seven bowling options in almost every game for India. As far as batting is concerned, they are making a mockery of oppositions. Just ask New Zealand. Abhishek Sharma has been the best T20I batter in this cycle. On top of that, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have also gained form at the right time. Hardik Pandya remains the MVP of the side, while Shivam Dube has been doing his role phenomenally.
