An India vs Pakistan cricket match has never shied away from drama and the Asia Cup 2025 was a clear indication. Throughout the tournament, the two arch rivals were in constant battle on and off the pitch. India however had the final say, winning all 3 games and lifting the Asia Cup title.
Winning the tournament did not put an end to the chaos. Trophy presentation was delayed and after India chose to boycott the ceremony. Amid the escalating nature of rivalry, here we look at the top 5 controversial moments in India vs Pakistan matches:
Asia Cup 2025
The entire Asia Cup 2025 has been one controversy after the another. The future of the tournament was itself in doubt following escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The political rivalry spilled over onto the cricket field. Suryakumar Yadav and team did not shake hands with the opposition, Salman Ali Agha avoided post match presentation and press conference. There were insulting chants, jet plan celebrations and complaints to the ICC. It all came to a head when India refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. The ACC chief is also an internal minister in the Pakistan government and Surya and Co chose to celebrate without the trophy. It was drama of the highest order.
Gautam Gambhir vs Shahid Afridi
Before Asia Cup 2025, India head coach Gautam Gambhir has had his fair share of IND vs PAK drama. The former India opener was involved in a heated altercation with Shahid Afridi during a match in 2007. Gambhir and Afridi exchanged a few words and then deliberately collided in the middle of the pitch in an ODI in Kanpur. The umpires had to intervene in what almost became a brawl. The two players were later fined by ICC for their conduct.
Aamer Sohail vs Venkatesh Prasad
Before Abhishek Sharma and Haris Rauf, it was Aamer Sohail and Venkatesh Prasad. In a tense IND vs PAK match during the 1996 World Cup, Sohail thrashed Prasad through the covers for a boundary. The left-hander then let the India pacer know where he hit it, asking him to go fetch the ball disdainfully. Prasad had his tail up and cleaned up his rival next ball. In an inconic display of one-upmanship, the India pacer gave a sen off, signalling Sohail to the pavillion.
