Matthew Breetzke becomes first batter in ODI history to score 50+ in first 5 innings

Breetzke has scored 463 runs in his first 5 innings; no other batter has even amassed 400 runs.

Matthew Breetzke has continued his record-breaking spree in ODI cricket. The 26-year-old had made his debut in February and became the first batter to score 150 on their 50-over debut. In the next months, Breetzke has played just 4 ODIs but has continued that golden touch.

Since that 150-run knock, the right-handed batter from South Africa has scored four consecutive fifties. As of now, 57 is his lowest score in ODIs. Playing against England at Lord’s, Breetzke scored a quickfire 77-ball 85. No one in the history of ODI cricket has scored consecutive fifty-plus scores in their first five innings.

His current average is 92.60 with a strike rate of 104.51. But this could have been even better. In three of his five innings, Breetzke has been dismissed in the 80s (83, 88, and 85). Had he been able to get across the line in each of these innings, he would have had over 500 runs to his name after 5 innings and 4 hundreds.

His captain, Temba Bavuma, once held the record for South Africa, but Breetzke has handily beaten that by 154 runs.

Most ODI runs after 5 Innings

  • 374 – Tom Cooper (Netherlands)
  • 328 – Allan Lumb (England)
  • 316 – Sunil Ambris (West Indies)
  • 309 – Temba Bavuma (South Africa)
