In what has come as major Indian Premier League (IPL) news, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) seem to have agreed to swoop legendary batter Kane Williamson. The New Zealand star, who won IPL 2016 with the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), is reportedly signed by LSG but not as a player. The Lucknow franchise has signed Williamson as a new strategic advisor on a special request by owner Dr. Sanjiv Goenka.
Changes at Lucknow Super Giants
LSG, who have been part of the IPL since 2022, haven’t seen much success. They qualified for knockouts in their first two seasons but finished seventh in their next two. Hence, there have been many changes in coaching staff in these four years. First there were Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel. Now, Justin Langer is the head coach, and his job seems to be secure as of now.
Having said that, LSG parted ways with mentor Zaheer Khan after just one season. Then came the signing of Bharat Arun as a bowling coach who was previously with Team India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Meanwhile, as per Revsportz, the KKR connection just got stronger. Carl Crowe is all set to join the LSG team as their spin bowling coach, bringing his valuable experience from his previous stint with KKR.
Now, with Williamson also coming in as a strategic advisor, the Rishabh Pant-led team will have all the resources. A superb coach staff will be there only to help but the biggest challenge for LSG would be manage their all-Indian pace attack. The likes of Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Akash Deep and Avesh Khan all endured injuries last season that affected the team massively. While LSG found gems in Digvesh Rathi and Prince Yadav, their batting was heavily dependent on the overseas trio of Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran.
