IPL Retention 2026 Live: Sanju Samson to CSK stalled, RR in a hurry to release players for Sam Curran

After playing only five matches for Mumbai Indians, the franchise is looking to release mentor Sachin Tendulkar's son Arjun Tendulkar. As per reports, he is likely to be part of the trade deal for Shardul Thakur, moving to Lucknow Super Giants.

If Ravichandran Ashwin is to be believed, Shardul Thakur will reunite with his former CSK and India teammate Deepak Chahar at Mumbai Indians. As per Ashwin, MI and LSG have already agreed on a Rs 2 Crore trade deal for Shardul.

For the first time in the franchise's history, Royal Challengers Bengaluru seem to have found the right combination after their title-winning run in IPL 2025. They don't have many players they would want to release. But even then, RCB would look to get a better replacement for some of the players. 1. Liam Livingstone: Did not perform up to the expectation. 2. Blessing Muzarabani: Only warmed the bench and is not considered to get a starting spot. 3. Mayank Agarwal: Came as an injury replacement for Devdutt Padikkal. But as Padikkal is fit, they may not want to have another opener.

As Rajasthan Royals do not have enough slots to take Sam Curran, they are looking to release both Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshna to free up overseas space.

As per reports, Ravindra Jadeja is keen on IPL captaincy. And that could be a deal-breaker for him if CSK let him go to RR. Rajasthan are already in a captaincy crisis with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel in the running to take over the captaincy from Sanju Samson.

“Without Jadeja, who’s your all-rounder in CSK? Having an all-rounder is very important; it’s the key role in the T20 format. I am not discounting Samson, who’s superb. I’ve been reading that Sanju Samson will slowly be developed as the successor to Dhoni. But for that, you’ve Urvil Patel already. He’s also a wicketkeeper batter,” India World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

Shreyas Iyer: He is the captain of the side and scored over 600 runs in tournament. Without any iota of doubt, he stays; more importantly, they should learn from the mistake, that KKR made before the 2025 season. Perhaps he can take them to the final in IPL 2026. Nehal Wadhera: He had his best IPL year in 2025, where he scored over 300 runs in 16 matches, including two fifties, and a strike-rate of 145. He would surely get an extended run with the team. Prabhsimran Singh: He has spent seven years with the team, and is one of their batting mainstays now. He too had an excellent run where he scored 549 runs and slammed four fifties. Josh Inglis: He wasn’t a regular in the side, played 11 matches, but did enough to get another run with the Punjab franchise. He went on to score 278 runs and even hit a fifty. More importantly, his strike-rate was over 160, that helped the team.

The report states that RR are in a delicate position at the moment, with just Rs 30 lakh in their purse. Meanwhile, Curran was bought by CSK for Rs 2.4 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. Therefore, RR would have to release at least one of their foreign players in order to acquire the services of Curran. Earlier, reports had claimed that RR wanted to let go of the Sri Lankan duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshan – both who were bought at the mega auction but had underperformed.

Sam Curran is reportedly part of the trade deal between CSK and RR. CSK will let go of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in exchange for Sanju Samson. However, since RR already have hit the quota of overseas players, they cannot take Sam Curran. Hence, RR will have to release at least one overseas player to make some room for the England all-rounder.

The most-awaited Sanju Samson-Ravindra Jadeja trade deal has to wait. It has hit a snag as Rajasthan Royals have no space to take an overseas player.

Rajasthan Royals’ overseas quota is full, and they cannot accommodate Sam Curran unless they release one of their existing foreign players.

They are considering to release Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga.
