IND vs SA 1st Test, Day 1: Bumrah highlights 1st day as KL Rahul, Washington Sundar hold fort

"The new ball was coming on nicely to the bat, but when the ball went soft, the bounce became low as well. My mindset was to bowl full and at the stumps. There has been some reverse swing on offer. If you bowl stump-to-stump, you'll get options to take wickets, and it isn't easy for batters to score runs. One end is fine to bat, the other end - the bounce is variable, and it's tough to score. Jassi bhai just told me that the wicket-taking option was if you bowl at the stumps, you've LBW, bowled and even catches coming to play when the line is accurate. We are in a good position having lost just one wicket. Markram and Rickelton put on a good stand; we did well to come back and I think we're ahead of the match at the moment."

The day ends 13 overs short with KL Rahul (13) and Washington Sundar (6) holding fort in poor lighting conditions. India end the day at 37/1, still trailing South Africa by 122 runs. India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early for 12 after South Africa were bowled out for 159 with Jasprit Bumrah bagging a five-wicket haul. 

KL Rahul hits a boundary to end India's 48-ball drought. But it comes after almost a 7-minute delay with South Africa searching for a shin pad. But with the time lost, the Proteas might have lost an over and a chance to get an Indian batter out. As a result of the delay, only spinners can bowl now. The floodlights are fully lit at the moment.

In the last 12 months, Team India have tried out six batters at No 3, with Cheteshwar Pujara's career coming to an end. Washington Sundar is the sixth batter on that list. Sai Sudharsan was getting into that groove but he was dropped for his Tamil Nadu and GT teammate Sundar.

Jasprit Bumrah has eclipsed Wasim Akram for most fifers against SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) by an Asian pacer. Akram had 12 fifers while Kapil Dev had 11. Bumrah now has 13 after he ran through South Africa's batting order with 5/27.

With a few overs left for the day to end, Washington Sundar (6) and KL Rahul (8) are steady. They are playing a cautious knock with the light going down. 

With Washington Sundar coming to bat at No 3 in Kolkata Test, this will be his sixth batting position. He has opened the innings for Tamil Nadu. In Tests, Washington Sundar has batted at:

With only a few minutes left in the day's play, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar have a tough task of keeping their wickets intact with the sun going down. 

With sunset set at 4:53 PM in Kolkata in winter, it's getting darker. The umpires might not allow pacers to bowl for long.

India have a new No 3 as Washington Sundar comes to the crease. It has been a musical chair since Cheteshwar Pujara was shown the door. India have tried multiple players but no one has cemented his place at the crucial position. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal attempts to drag a delivery back on to the stumps and the results in him being bowled out. Jansen gets his 1st wicket as Jaiswal is forced to depart.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's syndrome of slow starts continues as he is yet to get off the mark in the 1st innings on Day 1 of IND vs SA 1st Test. Jansen and Mulder had kept the explosive opener in check so far. Three deliveries later, he scores his first run and it comes via a boudary.

India are 8/0

It has taken one over and a delivery for India to get off the mark. Rahul takes the first run off Wiaan Mulder. And the second delivery turns out to be a no-ball as the bowler oversteps.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are out in the middle to commence the proceedings for India in the 1st Test in Kolkata. The umpires are taking a look at the ball and it seems like SA want a change. Marco Jansen starts for South Africa!

For the 16th time, Bumrah has gotten a five-wicket haul in Tests. He finishes with figures of 5/27 as Keshav Maharaj is his final victim after being trapped for an LBW. South Africa have no reviews left and the batter has no choice but to walk back. South Africa are bowled out for 159.

India get wicket number 9 as Jasprit Bumrah cleans up Simon Harmer with a peach of a delivery. This is the pacer's 4th wicket. India just one wicket away from bowling out South Africa.

Simon Harmer is the new batter out in the middle as session 3 on Day 1 of the IND vs SA 1st Test is underway. India will be hoping to wrap things up quickly and get some time out in the middle with the bat.

An early tea break has been taken on Day 1 of the IND vs SA 1st Test as Corbin Bosch is the latest batter to depart. He gets trapped for an LBW and India now have their 8th wicket. The hosts were exceptional in the 2nd session, managing to take 5 wickets while conceding just 49 runs after lunch

Tristan Stubbs and Corbin Bosch are on the crease, trying to rebuild after Siraj dealt two quick blows. This session has belonged to India so far with 4 wickets falling. 

Marco Jansen is cleaned up as Mohd Siraj strikes again. He removed Kyle Verreynne and then Jansen. India are in command in this 1st Test. 

Another poor review as South Africa lose their 6th wicket for 146. Kyle Verreynne departs as Mohd Siraj gets his first wicket. 

Kyle Verreynne has taken the review after Mohd Siraj trapped him LBW. The on-field decision was out. But Verreynne thinks he edged it. 

Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne are rebuilding South Africa's innings after two quick blows post lunch. Siraj hasn't been impressive in this innings, while Jadeja has kept things under control in this spell. 

Ravindra Jadeja has replaced Kuldeep Yadav from the other end. Bumrah and Kuldeep bowled a successful 10-over spell after lunch. 

Change in bowling as Jasprit Bumrah's 4-over spell ends. Mohd Siraj replaces Bumrah from the other end with Kuldeep Yadav continuing from one end. South Africa 136/5.

South Africa 131/5 as Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne following two quick wickets by Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. Shubman Gill has stuck to Bumrah-Kuldeep from two ends as India build pressure on the two unset batters. 

Dhruv Jurel misses a catch at short leg and Kyle Verreynne survives. It was never an easy chance as Verreynne hit it on the leg, directly to Jurel. But his reaction time wasn't fast enough to grab that catch. 

Kyle Verreynne comes to the crease after Tony de Zorzi was trapped LBW by Bumrah. He joins Tristan Stubbs.

It was always going to be an out if there was no edge. The replays showed that Tony de Zorzi did not edge that and South Africa waste a review. Jasprit Bumrah gets his third wicket as Proteas lose half their side for 120.

Tristan Stubbs has joined Tony de Zorzi in the middle after Kuldeep Yadav removed Wiaan Mulder. South Africa still have a long batting order to get to around 300-350 but it won't be an easy task against India's spin attack. 

India have broken the partnership just after the lunch break. Kuldeep Yadav trapped Wiaan Mulder LBW with the ball keeping low. South Africa are 4 down. 

Post lunch, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah have attacked South Africa from both ends. India want to break this partnership as soon as possible else, it could trouble them. 

Shubman Gill has introduced Kuldeep Yadav straightaway after the lunch break. With the ball old and soft, it is going to be a challenging session for both batters and the bowlers. 

Wiaan Mulder (22) and Tony de Zorzi (15) played a cautious knock before lunch. With the ball 27 overs old, they will have to negotiate with India's four-man spin attack. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja already showed glimpses, and the ball kept low on a few occasions. Now, they will also be up against Washington Sundar and Axar Patel.  

With Sai Sudharsan dropped and Devdutt Padikkal benched, Gautam Gambhir opted for fourth spinner Washington Sundar. As per the team sheet, Sundar was slotted in at No 3 to bat. Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble wasn't happy with the decision. 

“Really surprised at the lineup because I certainly expected Sai Sudarshan to be playing in this Test match. Who’s going to bat at No.3? That will be the question. Washington Sundar has been slotted to bat at No.3 so India will be bowling first. 4 spinners and 2 fast bowlers,” Anil Kumble said on Star Sports.

There go the bails as umpires call players for Lunch on Day 1. 

South Africa reached 105 for 3 after a session that swung around constantly, with neither side fully in control. India struck back after an early burst of boundaries, and by lunch the game felt nicely poised rather than one-sided. 

• South Africa’s openers came out blazing before India found a grip
• Siraj copped the early hammering as Markram and Rickelton drove freely
• Axar was taken on too, but India’s reply came through Bumrah's masterclass
• Kuldeep’s drift and turn accounted for Bavuma at a key moment
• Mulder and de Zorzi soaked up pressure to steady things

• The pitch is offering sharp turn when bowling a bit quicker. Superb news for India, who are playing with four spin options. 
• What has been fascinating is that the bounce off the deck is true. So batters can help themselves to remain on the backfoot (just hope you don't get LBW to a fuller one)
• South Africa were cruising at one point before Bumrah's masterclass and Kuldeep's wicket of Bavuma struck SA big time. 
• Tony de Zorzi looked great in Pakistan and we can say the same as of now in Kolkata as well.

Hey Bavuma, you came forward to block, but my left‑arm spin tossed the ball up and turned back in. The ball clipped the inside edge, popped up to Dhruv Jurel at backward short‑leg, and he took it cleanly. That’s three runs off eleven balls, and we’ve India are dominating.

Jasprit Bumrah fires India back into the game! 

Aiden Markram goes back to pavilion this time as Bumrah finds extra bounce off the deck. A back-of-the-length delivery by the speedster and the back kicked off, stunning Markram. Rishabh Pant did the rest behind the stumps. 

Temba Bavuma and Wiaan Mulder, two new batters on the crease now. All thanks to Bumrah!

A perfect start for South Africa in this Test series as they go unscathed after the first 10 overs. Markram and Rickelton have done well to see out Jasprit Bumrah before punishing Mohammed Siraj's poor bowling. Rickelton has looked solid from start, while Markram has now got hold of the pitch too. 

With 4 spin options and Bumrah, Siraj tired after the first spells - who will Shubman Gill turn to? Did India miss a trick by not selecting a 3rd pacer?

Siraj heads back to the pavilion quickly after his 3rd over as Dhruv Jurel places leg pads – a clear sign that a spinner is coming from next over onwards. 

Ryan Rickelton takes down Mohammed Siraj for 11 runs! 

A terrific over for South Africa as Rickelton punishes Siraj for erring in line. While Markram still on 0 after 18 balls, Rickelton is looking far better. Bumrah now steaming in as well. Something big surely coming up, eh?

So, there's a great carry on the Eden Gardens surface. Both Bumrah and Siraj are taking an over to settle in as Markram and Rickelton look composed. 

So, here we go. The players are lined up for the national anthems. It is South Africa's first followed by hosts India. 

India legend Anil Kumble rings the bell, a prestigious act at the iconic stadium as players take field. 

Unlike India, South Africa have more pace-bowling all-rounders. The Eden Gardens might not offer massive turn and hence it could be tough for India if SA pacers get early swing and seam. However, there's no Kagiso Rabada. Workload management perhaps?
