IND vs SA, 1st Test, Day 2: India's spin attack leaves South Africa rattled, Proteas 93/7

South Africa 93/7

Ravindra Jadeja (4/29), Kuldeep Yadav (2/12) and Axar Patel (1/30) reduced South Africa to 93/7 at the end of Day 2 as bad light once again curtailed the day. South Africa have a 63-run lead after India were bowled out for 189/9.

South Africa have lost their 7th wicket as Marco Jansen fell victim to Kuldeep Yadav. South Africa are 91/7 with a 61-run lead. 

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is not happy with Eden Gardens pitch and how it has behaved. 25 wickets have fallen in six sessions already and the Kolkata Test is heading towards a Day 3 finish. South Africa have a lead of 60 runs as they are 90/6 with 10 minutes to close time.  

There was a loud appeal as Marco Jansen was hit on the pad. The finger went up but Jansen took the review immediately. And the replays showed that Axar Patel's delivery was pitching outside. 

Kyle Verreynne departs!

Axar Patel strikes as Kyle Verreynne departs for 9. He is cleaned up trying to play a flamboyant shot. Captain Temba Bavuma is livid with his poor shot selection. Sout Africa are in danger now. They are 6 down and have a lead of just 45.

"Won’t have issues of jinxing wrto this, Bavuma is putting on a defensive master class already. He is picking up length early, getting to the pitch of the ball while defending and it’s not even a surprise that the ball doesn’t seem to be misbehaving while he is on strike."

Ravindra Jadeja leaves Tristan Stubbs bamboozled as he picks up his 4th wicket. South Africa are 5 down for 60 runs with just 30-run lead.

With South Africa losing four wickets, Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma have taken charge. They are holding the fort. 

Extra bounce this time and Ravindra Jadeja has dismissed Tony de Zorzi. The ball kissed the glove before hitting the pad and going to Dhruv Jurel at short leg. South Africa are 4 down for 40 runs. The lead is only of 10 runs. 

Ravindra Jadeja has struck again and South Africa have lost their third wicket for 38 runs as Wiaan Mulder falls with Rishabh Pant taking an easy catch. 

Wiaan Mulder and Temba Bavuma have put South Africa in the lead. If the Proteas can take a lead close to 200, they can win the Test in Kolkata. 

South Africa 25/2 as Ravindra Jadeja removes Aiden Markram for 4. Dhruv Jurel makes no mistake as South Africa lose their 2nd opener. Wiaan Mulder and Temba Bavuma are on the crease. 

India will look for quick wickets in the third session as spin set to dictate terms at the Eden Gardens. Wiaan Mulder joins Aiden Markram as South Africa have a tough task ahead. 

Kuldeep Yadav strikes first and Ryan Rickleton is trapped LBW. This time, he does not take the review and South Africa lose 1st wicket for 18 as the team head for tea. 

Jasprit Bumrah has troubled Ryan Rickleton with short balls and deliveries nipping back in. He survived after a bottom-edge saved him from an LBW.

Rishabh Pant will lead India in the 2nd innings as Shubman Gill is out injured. Indian spinners will have a big task in this 2nd innings. 

Nothing to write home about. So far, in this Test, no batter has scored a fifty. 

With Shubman Gill nursing a neck spasm, Axar Patel is the last wicket they needed. Gill won't bat in the 1st innings anymore. That means with Simon Harmer removing Axar, India are bowled out for 189. India take a slender 30-run lead. Now, it's on Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel to bowl South Africa out as soon as they can.

Marco Jansen has cleaned up Mohd Siraj as the ball kept low. As Siraj's defence fails, India are 8 down for 187.

Ravichandran Ashwin is impressed by Simon Harmer who has taken three wickets in this match and has changed the complexion of the game. 

A cracking square drive from Axar Patel against Marco Jansen ends a 48-ball boundary drought as India extend the lead to 20 runs.

India are 7 down as Kuldeep Yadav pokes a Marco Jansen delivery to the keeper. It seemed like a harmless delivery on the leg but Kuldeep decided to go for a flick, only to edge it. India are in trouble as they are 7 down for 172 with just a 13-run lead. Mohd Siraj comes to the crease.

Huge blow for India as Ravindra Jadeja falls to Simon Harmer. India are 6 down and effectively seven as Jadeja is trapped leg-before. With Shubman Gill unlikely to be available today, India are not in a strong position.

Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress.

With every delivery, a puff of dust comes out. KKR team management and the fans might ask, Why not give them a dustbowl in IPL when they need it the most? As for the Test, it is going to be hard labour for the batters with odd balls turning. It won't be an easy third or fourth innings. If India manage to take a 200-run lead, India can win by an innings here.

Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have put India into the lead. It has been a mixed Day 2 with three wickets falling in the second hour and Dhurv Jurel falling after lunch, apart from Shubman Gill's injury. But India will look at the Jadeja-Patel partnership to get to 300 runs, at least. 

Axar Patel is the new batter in as Shubman Gill stays put in the dressing room with a stiff neck. 

The partnership was going well but it has come to an abrupt end. Simon Harmer deals another blow as Dhurv Jurel falls for 14. Jurel did not read the length well and could only play it straight to Harmer, who dives and takes an excellent catch. The umpires had a look to confirm if the catch was taken legally and it was confirmed. India are 5 down for 153.

Ravindra Jadeja joins Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, and Daniel Vettori as only the fourth all-rounder to score 4000 runs and take 300 wickets in Test cricket. 

Dhruv Jurel begins the second session with two boundaries and the message is clear. India will be on the offensive and they won't take the backseat. And, Jurel taking on Corbin Bosch is the hint. 

And with that, umpires call for 'Lunch' on Day 2. The match brilliantly hangs in balance as India lose 3 wickets in the opening session.

Superb comeback from South Africa bowlers to see the backs of Sundar, KL Rahul and Pant. Pant looked ominous before he got out. Shubman Gill, meanwhile, hurt his neck and got retired hurt. He can come back later in the innings. While the trail remains just over 20 runs, India would need to be mindful that they have to bat fourth on this turning Eden Gardens pitch.

While Shubman Gill still remains in the dugout, it is Dhruv Jurel who has come in after Rishabh Pant's dismissal. 

South Africa continue to be in the game as they keep plucking away wickets. First it was Washington Sundar, then KL Rahul and now Pant, who edges one to the keeper. Corbin Bosch bowls an awkward bouncer that the southpaw tried to dab to the third-man region. But all he got was a thick edge and SA fielders are cock-a-hoop. 

IND 138/4 after 45 overs. The trail remains of 21 runs. 

To be fair, the audience is already dancing to Pant's music as he plays his own game. 🎤

These kinds of circumstances are designed for someone like Rishabh Pant to make a significant impact quickly, and he is a true game changer in the middle. South Africa must get him out as soon as possible. 

The deficit is just 27 runs now, with Pant batting on 27 off 23. Ravindra Jadeja also at 9* off 9.

Shubman Gill back to pavilion with a stiff neck, now KL Rahul loses his wicket despite laboring for 119 balls. Keshav Maharaj pitches one up but Rahul plays on the backfoot and hands a catch to Aiden Markram on the first slip. While the catch was brilliant, KL is stunned. 

India lose an untimely wicket as both overnight batters are now out. Rahul fails to convert his start once again, going out for 39. Ravindra Jadeja, the new RR signing, comes to the crease and is off the mark with a boundary.

Oh, what has happened there? A very unfortunate incident. Shubman Gill whallops a four while playing a slog sweep off Simon Harmer but a neck spasm has paused his innings prematurely. 

Gill’s neck snaps into pain after that daring sweep as physio runs in. The helmet was quickly off, and the captain’s stiff walk back towards pavilion signals a serious sprain. Meanwhile, the crowd erupts as Rishabh Pant makes a much-awaited comeback after his injury in England.

Dangerous Marco Jansen

And there it is—the variable bounce already on show from Jansen. The tallest fast bowler in the mix, his round‑the‑wicket angle to the right‑hander makes him look even sharper than yesterday. Key here would be to play as late as possible for KL Rahul, something he excels in. 

India - 46/1 after 24 overs. The trail is 113. 

First Boundary!

And here comes the first runs of the day via a streaky boundary off KL Rahul. With Jansen coming around the wicket, Rahul opens the face the bat intentionally just to see it go past the slips cordon. And with that, KL Rahul also completes 4000 Test runs for India!

Day 2 begins 😍

The South Africans gather in a tight huddle, the umpires step onto the field and the crowd erupts just as the Indian batters make their confident stride out. KL Rahul and Washington Sundar would love to see out the first hour of play as the former takes the strike against Marco Jansen. 

"There are cracks that are very prevalent. They will only get increasingly alarming as the game goes on. The good length is the area to target the bowlers, in terms of variable bounce. It doesn't look worn out as such right now, but, there will be turn on offer," chip Dinesh Karthik and Shaun Pollock on-air.
