The expected has transpired as Cameron Green has become the most expensive player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction. Not just that, the Australian has now become the costliest overseas player ever in the IPL auction history. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who entered the auction with the fattest purse of Rs 64.30 crore, splashed a whopping Rs 25.20 crore to buy Green on December 16.
Cameron Green was touted to be the costliest player in the mini auction as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and KKR eyed a first-choice overseas all-rounder. KKR released Andre Russell, who has now retired, meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran’s release opened a void in CSK. But funnily, Mumbai Indians (MI) opened the bidding for Green despite having a purse of less than Rs 3 crore. It was just in jest before Rajasthan Royals (RR) and KKR entered in a bidding war. RR went till Rs 13.40 crore for Green until CSK jumped in to take the bid to Rs 25 crore.
And with that, Green broke the all-time record. The previous record was set by KKR only when they snapped up Mitchell Starc for Rs 24.75 crore at the IPL 2024 auction. It was also a mini auction, where Pat Cummins also went for Rs 20.50 (bought by SRH). Incidentally, Green features in the most expensive overseas list twice after the Mumbai Indians bought the generational talent for Rs 17.50 crore back in IPL 2023 auction.

Note, Heinrich Klaasen (SRH) and Nicholas Pooran (LSG) are retained for a huge Rs 23 crore and Rs 21 crore by their respective franchises. They aren’t on the list above, as they have been retained at those fees but were bought at a lower price at the auction.
