Virat Kohli scoring back-to-back hundreds is not a surprise. South Africa chasing down a mammoth 359 isn’t a surprise. Even Washington Sundar getting dropped for the 3rd ODI isn’t shocking enough. But India winning a toss, finally, is. After a wait of more than 700 days, Team India have finally found the right side of the coin, winning the toss in an ODI. KL Rahul’s left-hand ploy did its work, as India have finally won a toss in the format for the first time since the ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final against New Zealand.

Whether it’s the men’s team or women’s, winning tosses has been harder for India than winning games. The women’s side have lifted the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 by winning just one toss in nine games. Meanwhile, it is remarkable to note that the men’s team didn’t win a toss in the ODIs since November 2023. As many as 20 ODIs took place in that period, with India winning 12 of those games.
The first two ODIs of the ongoing India vs South Africa series saw an advantage for the teams winning the toss. The dew factor has made it difficult for the bowlers to bowl in the 2nd innings, helping South Africa rock India in Raipur. In total, the Men in Blue have won just 11 tosses this year after playing 41 international games. That is a record of winning a toss after 3.77 games. Awful.
