Former Indian captain Kapil Dev is willing to support Vinod Kambli amid tough times. Calls for help from fans emerged after Kambli was seen struggling during the memorial unveiling ceremony for his coach Ramakant Achrekar last week. Sachin Tendulkar was also present at the event, and while the star batter looked fit as a fiddle, his old friend Kambli looked frail. Later, when he was handed the mic to speak, he struggled.
Kapil Dev ready to help Vinod Kambli
It was reported last week that winners of the 1983 World Cup were willing to help Kambli. But there are some terms and conditions. They want Kambli to support himself before they decide to do so. That is, they wish that Kambli, who has suffered from addiction, checks himself into rehab, and after that, they are willing to foot any bill that follows.
“We should all try to support him. But more than us, he has to support himself. We can’t look after anybody if that person can’t look after himself. All the cricketers feel very sad about what we have seen. I wish his closest friends can try to get him some help, to look after himself, to go back to rehab. People do get this illness, but you have to get back to rehab and we’ll all support him,” Kapil Dev told PTI.
One of Mumbai’s greatest, Sunil Gavaskar, also came out in support of Kambli. “The 1983 team wants to take care of him. We want to help Vinod Kambli get back on his feet,” the original Little Master had said.
