In what could be good news for Chennai Super Kings fans, Gujarat Titans have reportedly agreed to trade Washington Sundar to the team ahead of IPL 2026. The all-rounder, who made his IPL debut back in 2017 with Rising Pune Supergiants, featured in just 6 matches in IPL 2025 for GT, where he scored 133 runs and bagged 2 wickets. If true, the deal would work wonders for CSK who are looking for Ashwin’s replacement as the latter announced his retirement from IPL earlier this year.
Sundar to play for CSK in IPL 2026?
As per Tamil news website Samayam, GT have reportedly agreed to trade Washington Sundar for Rs 3.2 crore (the price they paid in the IPL 2026 mega auction) to CSK before IPL 2026. The report claims that the inability of the Titans to use the all-rounder effectively is the reason behind the trade deal. The report also states that CSK has imposed no conditions in the trade deal.
The report states that the CSK management had planned to replace Ravichandran Ashwin with Sundar before the latter announced his retirement and were in talks with GT since. Bought for Rs 9.75 crore, Ashwin failed to impress on his return to CSK, faring poorly with both bat and ball. He managed to score just 33 runs and take 7 wickets in 9 games, thereby failing to justify his price tag. While his release was imminent, Ashwin decided to bring the curtains down on his IPL career in order to explore other T20 leagues across the globe.
CSK’s decision to rope in Sundar comes as a part of the team’s efforts to revamp and add more youngsters to their side. The five-time champions hit a new low in IPL 2025 as they finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time.
