Yay for MI, nay for SRH! Ishan Kishan's Mumbai homecoming spoilt by Will Jacks

More than 80% of Ishan Kishan's career runs have come for Mumbai Indians, having played for the franchise from 2018-2024.

Ishan Kishan’s homecoming hasn’t gone as planned. The wicketkeeper batter who made his name while playing for the Mumbai Indians (MI) went against his ‘old team’ at the Wankhede Stadium while donning the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) jersey.

Having spent 7 of the 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons with MI, Kishan still has a soft space for the franchise in his heart. MI had shown the same faith in the wicketkeeper until the IPL 2025 auction. They had paid up much as Rs 15.25 crore for the batter in 2022. But due to a dip in his performance and the retentions restricted to just six players, MI let Kishan go.

Ishan Kishan fails against his old IPL team

This was going to be the first time Kishan would face MI. And while he doesn’t hold any animosity, he would have liked to show the franchise how big a mistake they made by letting him go. He would have wanted to do that, but desires often don’t manifest themselves into reality.

Coming into the middle in the 8th over, Kishan lasted just 3 balls. He was outdone by part-time spinner Will Jacks as he looked to come down the track and dispatch the ball over the boundary.

The dismissal wasn’t shocking. Kishan has always been a hit-and-miss player. After 10 seasons in the IPL, the southpaw doesn’t even average 29, and his strike rate is below 138. He’s scored over 400 runs in a season just three times. He’s been a massive underperformer, despite showing potential.

The IPL 2025 season has been the same. Kishan has just 2 double-digit scores in 7 innings. If we remove his hundred from the first match SRH played, he has scored just 32 runs in 34 balls.
