Shreyas Iyer has struggled with a long term back issue and the latest could be a massive setback for India's vice-captain.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided an injury update regarding Shreyas Iyer’s injury. Earlier today, the 30-year-old had to leave the field after taking a catch in the India vs Australia 3rd ODI in Sydney.

Shreyas Iyer goes off the field after injury

Shreyas collected the ball while running back, but landed awkwardly on the ground. The Indian ODI vice-captain looked in serious discomfort and asked for help immediately. Initially, it looked like he’d hurt his hip, but it turned out to be a rib injury.

After the Indian medical team assisted Shreyas off the pitch in the 34th over of the first innings, he didn’t return to the field. Since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli finished the chase, his help wasn’t needed for India to win.

About an hour before the match ended, BCCI shared an update about Shreyas’ injury. The board revealed that the batter had sustained damage in his left rib cage and has been taken to the hospital.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury,” BCCI informed.

Shreyas would hope that the injury is not serious. He has long struggled with a back injury and even asked for a break from red ball cricket to manage it. For India, Iyer has become a stalwart in the middle order, helping them to success in the Champions Trophy. Even in the Adelaide ODI, Shreyas returned to form with a half-century.
