Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) couldn’t have started the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season on a worse note. The 2022 and 2023 playoff qualifiers won’t have the services of Mayank Yadav in the first half of the 18th edition. According to ESPNcricinfo, Mayank Yadav hasn’t recovered from his lower back (lumbar stress) injury, which he sustained last October against Bangladesh.
Mayank Yadav to miss the first half of IPL 2025
He has been at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (also known as the National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru since. He was expected to regain fitness before the India vs. England series in January, but even after five months of rehabilitation, the speedster hasn’t recovered. Mayank has just resumed bowling, and also BCCI isn’t sure about his comeback; it might feature in the second half of the IPL 2025 season.
Mayank had impressed everyone with his ability to go over 150 km consistently, and that too with losing his line and length. A skill is rare among speedsters. However, the injury wasn’t far still. Mayank sustained a side strain injury after just 2 matches. He returned but couldn’t; two matches later, he was injured once again. After playing just 4 matches and bowling just 73 balls, his maiden IPL season was done.
LSG saw his potential and decided that they’d give him a 5400% pay hike. In IPL 2024, he was paid Rs 20 lakh and then was retained for Rs 11 crore before the IPL 2025 auction. However, LSG is now in a tough spot. They can’t name a replacement because Mayank Yadav might play at the later end of the season and also need another Indian pacer to cover for him.
