The T20 World Cup 2026 is done and India cricket team’s focus will next shift to the 2027 ODI World Cup. The Men in Blue, who have won the WC in the shortest format of the game two consecutive times, will be aiming to break their 16-year-old jinx, having last won the WC in the 50-over format way back in 2011. Following India’s win on Sunday, head coach Gautam Gambhir has revealed when the preparation for the ODI World Cup will begin.
When will India begin 2027 ODI World Cup preparation?
Speaking to India Today, Gambhir said that the preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup will start after the end of IPL 2026. The head coach claimed that it was better for the team to have early planning for the marquee tournament as the format wasn’t being played much these days.
“The planning for the 2027 World Cup will start after the IPL. There are 25 to 30 ODIs between IPL 2026 and the World Cup. This format is not played a lot these days. The earlier we start planning, the better it will be for us,” Gambhir said.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to be played in South Africa. Gambhir noted that playing cricket in South Africa wasn’t easy, and added that the team combination will have to be figured out and players have to be identified who are suited to play in those conditions. The Indian head coach said that the blueprint for the 2027 ODI WC will be ready by the time IPL 2026 ends.
“South Africa is not an easy place to play cricket. We have to figure out combinations and identify the players who are suited to the conditions. The selectors and the coaches will do that. By the time IPL 2026 ends, India will have a blueprint for the ODI World Cup 2027,” Gambhir added.
