India could not have asked for a better start to their new home season. Day 1 in Ahmedabad belonged almost entirely to the hosts, as Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah dismantled West Indies for just 162. Siraj was unplayable with the new ball, picking up four wickets, while Bumrah finished with three. Kuldeep Yadav also chipped in with two, including the final breakthrough. In reply, KL Rahul looked assured and unbeaten, guiding India to within touching distance of a first-innings lead by stumps.
For West Indies, it was another story of starts without substance. The top order faltered after brief resistance from Roston Chase, Shai Hope and Justin Greaves, none of whom could convert. Their bowling unit now faces a massive task as India eye control of the Test on Day 2. India bat till number eight and could post lead above 300 if they bat well.
