Arshdeep Singh picked the strangest way possible to outdo a legend. In the presence of Yuvraj Singh, who once turned Stuart Broad into a trivia question with six sixes, Arshdeep produced a record of his own in front of the Punjab great but one he would’ve preferred to avoid.
The left-arm quick bowled a 13-ball over in the second T20I against South Africa in Mullanpur, the longest over in T20I history, leaking seven wides and losing complete control of his radar.
Arshdeep Singh’s forgetful over in his PBKS home
Bowling the 11th over in his second spell after the powerplay, Arshdeep Singh leaked a six on the first delivery. Arshdeep kept searching for the wide yorker and kept missing by inches, repeatedly straying outside Quinton de Kock’s reach. By the time the umpire signalled wide number seven, Jasprit Bumrah had already walked up to Suryakumar Yadav for an urgent mid-over intervention. Cameras then caught bowling coach Morne Morkel looking anything but pleased.
Arshdeep did eventually close out the over, but not before conceding 18 runs and breaking an unwanted record. He is now the first bowler in T20I history to bowl seven wides in a single over. The previous mark belonged to Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq, who sent down six wides exactly a year ago. He bowled a notorious 13-ball over against Zimbabwe in a T20I in December 2024, conceding 19 runs with 6 wides and 1 no-ball.
With this, both Arshdeep and Naveen now share the dubious distinction of delivering the longest overs ever bowled by Full-Member nation players in T20Is – 13 balls each. It definitely cost India over rate penalty as well, meaning they would not have 5 fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the last over.
Arshdeep finished the innings wicketless but more importantly gave away 54 runs. India, in total, delivered 16 wide deliveries, their joint-second-most in a T20I.
