Joe Root continues to pile up centuries, equals Kumar Sangakkara for most Test hundreds

Joe Root has is now the the joint fourth on the list of players with most Test hundreds, equalling Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara

England cricket team batter Joe Root put up yet another classy performance as he slammed his 38th Test hundred on Day 3 of IND vs ENG 4th Test. The fifth highest run-getter in Tests has now equalled Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara’s record for most centuries in Tests. Root resumed the innings for England at 225/2 on Day 3 and played skillfully for a session and a half before reaching the triple-figure mark.

Root slams 38th Test century

Sachin Tendulkar is at the top of the list of players with most Test centuries with 51 to his name. Root’s ton at Old Trafford takes him to the joint forth position that he now holds along with Sangakkara. Recently, Root also overtook Rahul Dravid on the list of players with most runs in Tests.

Root frustrated the Indian batters on Day 3 and stitched a good partnership with Ollie Pope. He took 178 deliveries to reach the triple figure mark. Root’s innings was a perfect blend of boundaries and running between the wickets, as he continued to outfox the Indian bowlers.

The former England captain has enjoyed a resurgence since the start of this decade, leading the World Test Championship run tally. Root has 5807 runs since ICC introduced the tournament, 1600 more than next best Steve Smith. Root now will have eyes on the overall mark, with Ricky Ponting next in line. The former Australian captain scored 13378 in 168 Tests. Root needs to score 120 in Manchester to surpass that tally and be the second leading run-getter in entire Test history.
