Former India chief selector K Srikkkanth had no option but to accept that Shubman Gill‘s knock in IND vs ENG 1st ODI was one of the best. Known to be a fierce critic of the Indian vice-captain, the 1983 World Cup winner has criticized his inclusion in India’s XI and his elevation as Rohit Sharma’s deputy. However, the tables have turned after Gill’s knock in Nagpur.
Srikkanth turns into Gill’s fan
Speaking in a video on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth lauded Gill for playing an “intelligent knock”. He credited the vice-captain for playing a slow-paced & mature knock during India’s run-chase. Aniruddha Srikkanth said that Gill had taken a leaf out of Virat Kohli’s book en route the run-chase in Nagpur.
“He played a brilliant knock. Today I surrender to you completely. Shubman Gill played a very mature knock. More than mature, it was an intelligent knock. Shreyas Iyer had done all the work and had handed over the innings to Gill. He didn’t have to do much. He took his own time and did not go for big shots, especially against Adil Rashid. He played his normal game. Congrats Gill for getting the Player of the Match (POTM) award,” Srikkanth said.

In the past, Srikkanth had slammed Gill’s inclusion in the ODI squad, citing his poor performance in his last 10 innings in the 50-over format.
Coming in to bat at number 3, Gill aced his position as he led India across the line in the run-chase. The Indian vice-captain showed great patience en route his 87-run knock that was studded with 14 boundaries. In no manner did Gill look like he was in a hurry in Nagpur as he patiently went about his innings, playing primarlily as anchor to aggressor Shreys Iyer and from then on taking the responsibility to complete the run-chase for India.
