Shivam Dube proved to be one of India's unsung heroes at the T20 World Cup 2026 winning campaign.

The story of Shivam Dube hiding from everyone while getting on a 3AC train has earned him sympathy. It glorified his ‘down-to-earth’ character, with the story making headlines in all the major newspapers and media the day after India lifted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. But what should have been the major talking point about Dube never really made it to the frontpage. He remains an underrated tale, without whom India’s success story could’ve looked different. Regardless, now a two-time World Cup winner, Dube has done enough to capture the imagination of not just the general public but also true cricket fanatics.

Despite playing a match-winning cameo at the T20 World Cup 2024 final, Dube had his doubters. His strike rate in the IPL 2025 dropped to 132 from what was 162 in the previous season. Not just this, his limitations against pace, lack of feet movement and a negative matchup against mystery spinners were areas of massive concern. Fast forward now, he has shut every critique of his. Not just that, he gave India a cushion of being the sixth bowler in the lineup.

No doubt Hardik Pandya is touted as one of the best all-rounders of his generation. He is considered the MVP of the Indian unit, without whom India won’t field their strongest side. The likes of Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah are non-negotiable. But what Dube did at this World Cup was insane. He may not have the pace and skills of Pandya as a bowler, but with the bat, he literally outshone him.

Powerhouse that gave India advantage

The easiest way to understand Dube’s contributions at the World Cup is to see when he walked in. Rarely was he sent in with a runway already built for him. More often, he arrived when India either needed course correction or one clean over to change the mood of the innings. That is what made his tournament so valuable.

The duck against USA could easily have pushed him into the background. Instead, it became the only time in the tournament he truly failed. In that match, everyone actually failed barring Suryakumar Yadav. Against Namibia, with India threatening to waste a strong position, his 23 off 16 dragged the total beyond 200.

In Colombo against Pakistan, on a surface where no batter scored runs after the powerplay, his 27 off 17 gave India late thrust. Then came the Netherlands game, where he produced perhaps the innings that best summed him up. India were 69 for 3 after nine overs. Dube walked in, took stock for barely a moment, and then tore through the middle overs with 66 off 31. Four fours, six sixes, and two wickets later, he had authored one of the most complete all-round performances by an Indian in the tournament.

And then the Super 8s and knockouts arrived, which should have been the stage where nerves exposed him. Instead, this was where he became indispensable and showed his experience. Against South Africa, in a chase that had already gone south, his 42 off 37 was not decorative. It stopped a collapse from becoming a humiliation.

Then came must win matches and Dube was incredible. So underrated yet so impactful. Against West Indies in a virtual quarter-final, the scorebook will remember Samson’s 97, but the chase turns uncomfortable without Dube’s two boundaries off Shamar Joseph in the 19th over. Even Jasprit Bumrah, who was outstanding in that game, lauded Dube’s two boundaries.

In the semi-final against England, his 43 off 25 ended up mattering enormously in a seven-run win. He took apart Adil Rashid, who was the trump card for England. Dube built on his reputation of being a spin basher and he bashed perhaps the most skilful spinner in the tournament. In the final, with India wobbling after an electric start, he smashed 26 off eight and pushed the total to 255, the highest ever in a men’s T20 World Cup final. That is not support-act stuff but something that needs to be appreciated.

Dube did what most eyes missed

His numbers of 235 runs at an incredible strike rate of almost 170 look so good. But the nuance sits elsewhere. Dube gave India tactical elasticity. He allowed them to play an extra batter without feeling short of a bowling option, even if his overs did not always look pretty. Yes, there were expensive spells. Yes, captains had to hide him from certain matchups.

But remember the work he put in with bowling coach Morne Morkel. He used wide yorkers to a great effect, bowling slower balls that some batters failed to hit. Dont forget that it was Dube who broke the 97-run stand between Dewald Brevis and David Miller, sending back the former.

There was also a noticeable change in his batting. Earlier versions of Dube could look one-dimensional, especially when pace rushed him or mystery spin cramped him. This time he looked more assured in accessing different pockets of the ground. He used his height to a great effect, reaching for good length balls which are difficult to get under for other batters. He was still strongest when targeting straight and into the arc over midwicket. He may not look aesthetic but when he hits, you know there’s a chance for a catch…a chance for fans and not fielders.

That is why calling him India’s actual MVP is not contrarian for the sake of it. It is simply an acknowledgement of his skill and might that surely aren’t replaceable at the moment.
