Finn Allen and Tim Seifert have amassed 446 runs as an opening partnership, the most in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.

On paper, New Zealand is no match for India. But that was the case in the first semifinal as well. South Africa were the favourites by some margin. Yet, after a clinical bowling display, the Kiwi openers blew the Proteas away. Coming to the 2026 T20 World Cup final, Finn Allen and Tim Seifert might be the biggest obstacle between India and a third trophy.

Allen finished the semifinal on his own. But together they are much more dangerous. They’ve broken the record of most runs as a partnership in a single edition of the T20 World Cup, 446. It’s pertinent to break the opening stand early, or India might chase the leather throughout the match.

Bring Bumrah early, end match quickly?

So, how does India tackle them? Former India captain Anil Kumble has a two-word answer: Jasprit Bumrah. While Allen is untested against the ace pacer, Seifert struggles against him. Arshdeep Singh has been taken to task by both, while Hardik Pandya has kept Allen quiet before.

“Give Bumrah the first over itself, if you feel that is the match-up. Why save his overs? If Finn Allen and Tim Seifert start well, then New Zealand’s innings progresses well. So, it is important to dismiss them quickly. They have better numbers against Arshdeep and Hardik, so I think Bumrah has to bowl with the new ball,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo.

That’s why Kumble thinks it’s best to introduce Bumrah early. In the ongoing T20 World Cup, India has chosen to introduce him in the 4th or 5th over instead of the 1st or 2nd. But if Allen or Seifert gets going, it’ll be all too late. The later Bumrah is introduced, the less help he’ll get from the surface. Which means they can play him out easily and target other bowlers.
