The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has switched to Plan B to keep the Pakistan Super League intact. As the war in West Asia intensifies, all countries are facing a fuel crisis. Pakistan is no different and considering that the PCB has announced a revised schedule for PSL 2026, confining the tournament to just two venues, Lahore and Karachi. Originally, the PSL 11 was supposed to be held in six venues. The fuel crisis in Pakistan has also prompted the PCB to host matches in empty stadiums.
The PSL 2026 was supposed to start a new era with Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Peshawar joining Karachi and Lahore in hosting matches. However, now, Lahore will host 22 games, starting on March 26, including the opener, playoffs and the final. Karachi will host 21 league games and the Qualifier on April 28.
Watch-from-home PSL
With the Pakistan government asking employees to work from home due to low fuel stock in the country, the PCB has also asked their fans to watch from home and not come to the stadiums. The reason is the fuel scarcity in Pakistan. Thanks to the West Asia War and Iran disrupting the major crude oil supply chain, Pakistan has about two weeks of oil stock and even less of LPG. Both are essential for conducting PSL matches smoothly.
The Pakistan government has already increased fuel prices by 20% since February, with petrol hitting PKR 320 and diesel crossing the PKR 330 mark. Even aviation fuel has surged by over PKR 15,000, prompting over 1500 flight cancellations. The situation has been so bad that Pakistan has adopted a four-day work week for employees, and many schools and colleges have been forced to go to online only classes.
“After discussions with our security agencies, we decided that the PSL would continue as per the original schedule. But we can’t ask people to restrict their movements and then have 30,000 people in stadiums every day. We decided that as long as this crisis is ongoing, we will not have crowds at matches. This was a difficult decision, but it needed to be made. The opening ceremony will also be cancelled,” PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi told reporters on March 22.
Revised PSL 2026 Schedule
While the PCB adjusted the schedule to fit into the two venues, the Lahore Qalandars vs Hyderabad Kingsmen opener remains in place. Lahore will now host Eliminator 1, Eliminator 2 and the final.
