It is time for yet another report for the Indian squad at Asia Cup 2025. This time, Hindustan Times claims that while the 14 players have been confirmed, the selectors are in a dilemma for the last spot — and the race is between Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Rinku Singh and Riyan Parag.
Shreyas Iyer vs Washington Sundar
To go further, it is a close call between Washi and Shreyas — with the former proving his credentials in the IND vs ENG Test series, while the other one doing his bit in the IPL for the last two years. Amongst them too, the all-rounder might just be the need of the hour, with the UAE conditions likely to support a spinner like Washington, and a batter like him too, who can use the long handle lower down the order.
Riyan Parag vs Rinku Singh
It is also pretty well known that coach Gautam Gambhir trusts all-rounders to do the job for the team. Though Riyan Parag might be lagging behind in the pecking order. Even though he had a decent IPL with the bat, but he doesn’t quite offer, what Washi does as a spinner.
India Squad Announcement for Asia Cup on Aug 19
As far as Rinku Singh is concerned, he was picked as a finisher in the Indian team, but he might not be needed after all. He didn’t have a great IPL, where he managed 206 runs in 13 matches. In short, the last man selection totally depends on what team combination the selectors have gone with.
The Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is expected to be announced on August 19, while the team plays its first encounter in the tournament only on September 10. The much-discussed IND vs PAK match will happen on September 14.
