There is no better moment than seeing a head coach praise the captain, and that’s exactly what we witnessed. In a recently released video by ICC, Gautam Gambhir spoke about his relationship with Rohit Sharma and showered praise on him. And why not? The team has been performing wonderfully in white-ball cricket under his leadership.
Yes, the duo faced a lot of criticism due to poor outings in red-ball cricket, having lost two series, but that’s in the past. Currently, the team is all set for the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, and their journey has been impressive so far. First, they entered the tournament after defeating England by a 3-0 margin and have continued their brilliant form in this tournament as well.
Rohit has led the team in all the group matches and the semi-final, showcasing his sharp leadership skills by winning all the games. Now, it’s time for the final against New Zealand.
Speaking about Gambhir, as mentioned, he discussed his relationship with the Indian skipper and how the ‘Hitman’s’ approach is positively impacting the Indian camp.
Gautam Gambhir on Rohit Sharma
“Forget about Rohit as a captain, I’ve had a fabulous relationship with him. I think he’s just a great guy, and that is something that’s important. When you’re a good human being, you end up becoming a good leader. That’s the reason why I feel he’s achieved quite a lot with his IPL franchise and has won the T20 World Cup as well,” Gambhir said in a video released by the ICC.
“But again, those are histories, that’s the past. Now we have a new challenge ahead. Hopefully, he can be at his best, not only from a batting point of view but as a leader as well,” the India head coach added.
All eyes on Rohit and his captaincy in Champions Trophy final vs New Zealand
With everything set for the Champions Trophy final, it will be highly interesting to see how Rohit performs as a leader. His batting intent has surely been a talking point recently, with some believing he should continue playing aggressively to give the team a strong start in the first 10 overs. Meanwhile, notable figures like Sunil Gavaskar and others suggest that he could adjust his approach slightly.
We also witnessed Gautam Gambhir coming to Sharma’s defence, emphasising that the team doesn’t just focus on individual performances but values the intent shown, highlighting the strong bond between these two cricketing greats.
Amidst all this, the praise for Rohit Sharma as a leader hasn’t stopped. While nothing is confirmed yet, this could possibly be his final ICC tournament as a skipper. With no upcoming T20I appearances since he has retired from the shorter format of the game, and with India not in the WTC final this time, there may not be another major ICC event for him in the near future.
